PARADIGM SHIFT!

As indicated in my post last year “Watch This Space”, there has recently been a significant shift in the United States regarding how nutrition is viewed. The US Health Department has updated its nutrition recommendations and introduced a revised food pyramid.

The new US Food Pyramid 2026

It’s not entirely “new” - in many ways, it’s simply inverted. Foods that were previously recommended in large quantities are now advised to be eaten sparingly, while foods that were once approached with caution are now being recognised for their nutritional value.

Carbohydrates are now recommended to be eaten in limited amounts, with advice to reduce reliance on foods such as bread, pasta and refined grains.

Meanwhile, protein and healthy fats are being emphasised, with greater encouragement to include foods like red meat, poultry, seafood, eggs, butter, olive oil and full-fat dairy.

This represents a significant shift in thinking - one that I believe is long overdue.

Australia has not yet made the same move. With our steadily rising rates of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, dementia and sarcopenia, one can only hope our national guidelines evolve sooner rather than later.

In a world that often feels uncertain, there are still things we can control…

Our health is our greatest asset!!

Protect it by maintaining your strength and fitness, and by choosing your food wisely - prioritising whole foods, especially protein and fat, and minimising carbs and highly processed and packaged foods.
