My Story, My Why!
If only I knew 30 years ago what I know now...
Like many women growing up in the 70s, 80s, and 90s, I followed the health advice we were all given: eat low-fat, avoid saturated fats, limit protein, do lots of cardio, and steer clear of strength training so we wouldn’t “bulk up.” We swapped out real food for packaged low-fat products, replaced fats with sugar, and were told vegetable oils were good for our hearts and cholesterol caused heart disease. Sunscreen became a must, and being “healthy” meant eating salads and staying skinny.
Fast forward a few decades, and what are we seeing? An explosion of chronic health issues—heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, obesity, dementia, lowered immunity, autoimmune diseases, vitamin and mineral deficiencies, osteoporosis, muscle loss, sarcopenia, … It’s heartbreaking to see so many older adults, especially women, struggling with mobility, frailty, depression, and loss of independence.
I never knew that insulin is our body’s main fat-storing hormone. Or that the vegetable oils we were told to trust are highly inflammatory and toxic. I didn’t realise how critical protein is as we age, or how essential it is to build muscle while we still have the support of hormones like estrogen and testosterone.
Then came menopause—and with it, stories I now hear every day:
“I’ve never had weight around my stomach before.”
“I can’t think clearly.”
“My scans show I’m losing muscle even though I’m training.”
And it’s not just women. As a qualified sports nutritionist, I also work with athletes who are constantly pushing their limits but not seeing the performance, recovery, or energy they expect. Nutrition makes the difference. With the right fuelling strategy, injuries decrease, recovery improves, and energy and performance can thrive.
The common thread? Outdated nutrition and lifestyle advice.
That old advice isn’t serving us anymore. It’s time for a new approach—one that’s rooted in up-to-date science, whole foods, strength training, and long-term health. We need to unlearn, refocus, and adjust to regain our health, strength and fitness.
I’ve lived this transformation myself. I lost 25kg over two years, healed my itchy and inflamed skin, resolved chronic hay fever, reversed hypoglycaemia, and reclaimed my metabolic health and strength post-menopause. I feel better in my 50s than I did in my 40s.
I want that for you too. Whether you're chasing your next PB, looking to up your performance game, wanting to change your body composition, or simply want to feel healthy and strong again. My approach - unlearn outdated advice, refocus on what works, and adjust habits for long-term health.
It doesn’t have to be complicated, and it’s not about perfection. It’s about progress. It’s about learning what works for you, unlearning what doesn’t, and taking back your health – one choice at a time.
Let me help you turn your story around too.
This is my story. This is my WHY.
What’s yours?
Two “before” photos of me; I was kickboxing 3 times per week and going to the gym 2 to 3 times per week and couldn’t figure out why I wasn’t losing weight. I felt that my body shape didn’t represent my level of fitness. It was confusing, upsetting and frustrating.
This is part-way through my weight-loss journey.
