Food Addiction
I just finished reading “Rewire Your Food-Addicted Brain” by Claire Wilcox, MD, and found it incredibly insightful. It provided a deeper understanding of what people struggling with food-addiction behaviours may experience - extremely valuable from a nutritionist’s perspective.
Dr Wilcox, an addiction psychiatrist, explores the neuroscience of food addiction: how cravings are formed, how they alter brain chemistry, and how they can lead to compulsive eating. She clearly explains which foods tend to be problematic, the brain’s reward and conditioning systems, and the roles of tolerance, withdrawal, and impaired decision-making in sustaining addiction.
Part 2 focuses on treatment and recovery, including strategies such as abstinence versus harm-reduction approaches, reducing food-cue sensitivity, strengthening emotional resilience, and improving decision-making capacity.
Overall, it’s a well-written, evidence-based, and thought-provoking read - highly recommended for anyone interested in the science behind eating behaviour and recovery.
